On October 31st, the English-speaking world celebrates Halloween. However, we are also going to celebrate it at school. But, what are its origins?
Its original name was Samhain, which means "the end of the summer". In old Ireland, people celebrated the end of the harvest and the beginning of the dark part of the year (winter). On this day, Celtics thought the line between the dead and the living disappeared, so that ghosts and spirits could come to our world. Among those spirits, there was a very evil one. It was Jack O'Lantern.
Jack used to go from house to house saying "Trick or treat!". The best was to have a deal, because if not, the consequences could be horrible for you.
Yes, you are right...Jack is the name of the famous pumpkin and the reason why children dress up and go from house to house trick-or-treating.

El 31 de octubre, los países de habla inglesa celebran Halloween. Sin embargo, nosotros vamos a celebrarlo también, pero ¿cuáles son sus orígenes?
Su nombre original era "Samhain", que significa "el final del verano". En la vieja Irlanda, la gente celebraba la recogida de la cosecha y el principio de la parte oscura del año (el invierno). Se pensaba que la delgada línea entre los vivos y los muertos desaparecía durante este día, y los espíritus podían venir a este mundo. Entre esos espíritus, había uno especialmente maligno: Jack O'Lantern.
Jack solía ir de casa en casa pidiendo un "truco o trato". Lo mejor era hacer un trato con él y darle lo que quisiera, porque si no, las consecuencias podían ser fatales.
Sí, tienes razón...Jack es el nombre de la famosa calabaza y la razón por la que los niños se disfrazan y van de casa a casa pidiendo su truco o su trato.
